Clelia’s 98th Birthday Glider Flight

Here’s a five minute clip of a Birthday ride in our Duo. The passenger; my 98 year old first cousin. Her brother was a B-29 Aircraft Commander in the 29th bomb group. He was lost on his first mission; the big B-29 fire bombing raid on Tokyo the night of March 9-10, 1945. I credit…

Perry (R5N) Photo Slideshow by Glenn Holden

It was great to visit with many of you at Perry this past year. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to compete. However, my trusty Canon entertained me while I remained runway bound this year, and you may see some photos in the SSA calendar or magazine later. In the meantime, I’ve made a quick slide compilation…

[HD Video] Gliders Playing Below Rim of Kolob Canyon, Utah

Gliding Kolob Canyon

This is the second of two videos I made shot over two days of soaring a few weeks ago. Launching from Hurricane, Utah a few high performance sailplanes explored the low altitude soaring potential of several southern Utah parks and landmarks. This video shows us enjoying the amazing red rock cliffs and deep gulleys of…

[HD Video] The Sound of a Shuttle Booster Falling from Space

Thanks to Gordon Boettger for alerting us to this fascinating video. Taken by a camera attached to one of the Space Shuttle’s solid rocket boosters, it not only shows the entire ascent and descent phases from the booster’s point of view, but it includes the actual sounds recorded as the booster falls back into the…

[HD Video] Gliders Racing 1000 ft Above Desert

It is hard to imagine that gliders could comfortably cruise less than 1,000 feet above the desert floor at ground speeds often over 140 miles per hour for over 20 miles with nowhere to land in sight! Note the completely unlandable terrain both above and below the ridge making for spectacular scenery but scary flying. This was a very fun day of flying! Thanks for watching, Bruno (B4).

[HD Video] Three Gliders Racing in the Wyoming Mountains

Gliders Racing the Wyoming Salt River Mountains

Sit back and enjoy 42 uncut minutes of fast low mountain racing in Wyoming’s Salt River Range taken during the 2011 Logan 15-Meter Nationals. This is not the regular YouTube soaring video with lots of short video cuts edited to music, but shows advanced mountain racing averaging well over 120 mph continuous ground speeds. Just tell your boss that you need to take a 42 minute break today…hope you enjoy!

SSA 2012 — Mountain and Ridge Soaring in Northern Utah

Northern Utah provides a unique opportunity in the USA to truly fly “in” the mountains. Logan has often been compared to Rieti, Italy, Saint-Auban, France and Omarama, New Zealand for the true mountain and ridge flying experiences. The skills and techniques required as well as the potential for long cross-country flights will be explored.

HD Video from B4 – “Gliding is so Freakin’ Fun”

Hi everyone – I’m Bruno Vassel IV (B4) flying out of Utah, (western USA) and have really enjoyed making soaring videos since 2007.  Inspired by Juan Mandelbaum’s amazing film A Fine Week of Soaring,  I started taking a video camera with me while flying first a 1967 Phoebus, then ASW-20B and now an ASW-27B as…
