[HD Video] Three Gliders Racing in the Wyoming Mountains
Sit back and enjoy 42 uncut minutes of fast low mountain racing in Wyoming's Salt River Range taken during the 2011 Logan 15-Meter Nationals. This is not the regular YouTube soaring video with lots of short video cuts edited to music, but shows advanced mountain racing averaging well over 120 ... ∞
Logan 2011 – a more sympathetic view
I disagree with Frank Payter’s pessimistic view of the 2011 Logan contest and especially with a pessimistic view of this site. I’m not a “local expert.” These are just my views based on flying half of the nationals there.
Overall, Logan is a very promising site. It has good weather, a ... ∞
Thoughts on the Logan 15m Nationals
A few days after the Logan Nationals were over, I had a chance to write down some thoughts about how I thought contest organizations are supposed to work in general, and the contest organization at Logan in particular. At about the same time, Mike Shakman (SH) cc'd me on a ... ∞
Day 9 (final day) at the Logan 15m nationals
Contest Website | Contestants | Scores | SPOT Tracking
Today was the last flying day of the 2011 15m Nationals at Logan. The weather and the task was pretty straightforward for once, with the exception of a slow start to the thermals on the Logan ridge off tow. The slow start problem was (mostly) solved by using ... ∞
Crews and their pilots at the Logan 15m Nationals
Contest Website | Contestants | Scores | SPOT Tracking
I'm normally crewless (and clueless) at regional competitions, but I try to have a crew at nationals. Having a crew makes a huge psychological difference, especially in a physically demanding contest like this one has become. This year I was fortunate to have a great crew here in ... ∞

This morning we were awakened by the 'Osprey Reveille' at about 0630, after a whole 5 hours of sleep. The micro castle is in an RV park more than a mile from the airport, but somehow the noise from the Osprey's main rotors when they start their testing ... ∞

First, my apologies for not getting this report out earlier - I know there are many who depend on these reports to follow the action. I can only say that by the time I got home last night (about midnight), I couldn't even find my bed, much less ... ∞
Wednesday Day 8 15 Meter Nationals
The weather continues to be fickle and is making the task advisory committees job more difficult. The monsoon moisture is to the SE but pieces, plumbs or 'who no whatever else noun could be used' to describe the moisture that being observed around the Logan airport.
The task advisory committee and ... ∞
Update on Day 7 at 15 Meter Nationals
The day started great with quick climbs at the start and fast runs on the first leg to the Tetons. We were watching the radar and saw cells starting to develop over Preston in a line from there to Afton. We could see the big cells at Preston and thought ... ∞
15 Meter Nationals – Day 7 start
The monsoon moisture has moved to the east of the task area leaving partly cloud skies, good looking soaring conditions and soaring models that support a long challenging task.
The eighteen pilots were assigned the task of

When I first got here at Logan, I had a very interesting conversation with a fellow Condor pilot (and very good western soaring pilot) David Leonard (ZL), who told me that he expected major ups and downs in the score sheet over the course of the 15m nationals ... ∞
15m Nationals–A Note from Ken Sorenson
Editor's note: There have been several conversations in the blogosphere regarding the recent decision by the contest organizers at the 15m Nationals in Logan, UT to request the removal of several contest reports from the SSA website. Soaring Cafe was asked to post this note by the SSA Contest Committee ... ∞

Wow, what an interesting contest day today. This morning when Mark and I were poring over the weather forecasts, we were seeing 15-17,000 msl cloudbases, 5-7kt lift values, and a good chance of cumulus, and this was later supported by Mike the Strike's weather forecast at the 10am ... ∞
Quick update at 9pm MDT from Logan.
TOUGH DAY! Weather forecast and models were showing good soaring throughout the tasking area. 4 TP task for 4:00 was called with nominal distance at 306 miles.
Day started slow due to no wind and inversion but we could see the teasing clouds to the ... ∞
No fly day for 15m nats, Day 5 for Regionals
I have been asked by the contest management here at Logan to stop posting my reports on the official SSA site, so henceforth these reports will be available only on SoaringCafe.com. Apparently I was using the 'U' (Unlandable) word a little too often for their taste. I freely admit that ... ∞

After getting to bed last night after midnight, my crew Mark Hawkins and I 'slept in' until 7:30 this morning. I for one really needed the sleep, as the schedule here at Logan is extremely hectic. The combination of a 12:30pm grid, followed by a typically late launch ... ∞

I'm writing this the following morning, as the days run so long here that it is almost impossible to get everything done, get some food, and get to bed before midnight. The way things are going here, we're going to remember the 15m nats more as a survival/endurance ... ∞

First, apologies to all for writing this the morning after, but Mark Hawkins (of Hawke Tracking fame and my crew for this contest) had to run out after I landed and pick Dennis Linnekin (DL) out of a hayfield north of Preston (about 25m north of Logan). Dennis ... ∞

This morning when I looked out the window of the micro-castle, I saw pretty much the same weather we had yesterday that resulted in a no-fly day. However, at the morning meeting Mike the Strike was optimistic that today's weather would be much better, and the OD problem ... ∞
Yesterday was the first potential contest day for the regional, and the 2nd official practice day for the nationals. The weather forecast from 'Mike the Strike' wasn't particularly optimistic, so most nationals pilots kept their gliders in the boxes, but the regional guys had to assemble, grid, and then wait. ... ∞

This was the official practice day for the regional, and the first of two practice days for the 15m nats, so we were all primed a great Logan day. The weatherman told us we should expect blue conditions with some chance of clouds in the eastern part ... ∞
The one practice day of the Regionals and first of two practice days for the Nationals has started off sloooooooooooooooooooooow!
