Challenging Fun – Coast Runs in New Zealand

Snapshot_94Looking at some of the recent OLC flights from New Zealand there is a number of high mileage flights. It is early spring in the Southern Hemisphere and the small but enthusiastic Auckland Aviation Sports Club has managed to exploit some robust Spring South Westerly's allowing them to do a remarkable flight affectionately called the "Coast Run". In the Northwest of Central Auckland, the club members are waiting for winds blowing with 20 – 35 knots between 210 – 260 degrees. The Coast Run takes them out for a round trip of 224 km, mostly done at altitudes below 1000 feet…
