UK Open Class Nationals, 15m Nationals andd Lasham Regionals – Day 9 and Final Results

With a warm front, albeit weakening, progressing over us from south to north through the day, chances of flying looked slim. During the morning there were small and scraggy Cu under stratus cover, but this made way for pure stratus and light rain in the afternoon. So again, no flying was missed by the scrub decision.

The organisers have done a great job this week in a very challenging and almost unprecedented situation, giving the pilots as many chances as possible to fly in the miniscule windows we’ve had on some days. Great thanks go to them, and there is a plan to run the Lasham Regionals again in August alongside the Junior Nationals to make up for the huge number of days missed this time round, so let’s hope that we get some better weather then!

So, round to the results:-

Lasham Regionals A Class

G Dale won yesterday’s task by 16 seconds ahead of Dave McCarthy, and has won the competition overall. After 2 competition flights G Dale sits on 1190 points, 191 ahead of second place Dave McCarthy. In third place Mike Bird, just one point behind second place.

Lasham Regionals B Class

Yesterday’s competition day was the only one for the B Class, so decided the overall results. In 1st place, Jindrich Svorc on 997 points, 2nd was taken jointly by Gordon MacDonald and Jeremy Pack, tied on 950 points.

15m Nationals

The 15s also only had one day of competition (yesterday), and was extremely tight at the top. Derren Francis took 1st place by 1 second ahead of Dave Watt, and a podium of Ventus 2s was completed by Phil Jones, 15 points behind.

Open Class Nationals

The top three places were taken by the three Open Class competitors from the UK who went to last year’s European Gliding Championships. Pete Harvey came first after one day of competition, 3 minutes ahead of second place Steve Jones, who in turn was three minutes ahead of Kim Tipple.
