Vulture Pair

Photo 611.

Taking a chance just in launching itself really paid off

Location: Santa Cilia, Spanish Pyrenees

Glider: Duo Discus

Camera: Panasonic DMC-TZ7

This was taken on Day 3 of our flying  in Spain, with showers to the North (as the picture shows), showers to the South and West and 8/8 out to the East. CuNim saved our day an hour or so before taking this photo, albeit ironically as it then decided to give us a wash as we landed.

A glider flight in the Pyrenees would put a birdwatcher in Nirvana. Maybe there’s some money to be made there?

Anyway…

Managed to get some fairly decent shots of the vultures and kites, this being one. This came from a slightly larger photo which actually showed another vulture, but by cropping as it has been, a triptych-style (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triptych) picture is created where you have three fairly distinct layers; the ground, the background cloud, and the vultures and foreground cloud. As a shot like this can often be a bit boring if the sole focus is on the birds and they’re pretty small, it really helps to have something else a bit out of the ordinary in the frame, so in this case the river beneath brings a touch more interest to the photo.
