Thermals, Ridge, and Wave

Author’s Note: This is a reprint from my club newsletter about a weekend trip to Talihina, OK in February 2013. For more information on ridge and wave soaring in Oklahoma, check out http://talihinasoaring.com/Talihina_Soaring/Welcome.html. The toll booth operators in Oklahoma are getting smart. They wanted to know if I was headed to a glider convention. Jeff…

Snapshots

Adrienn tells us that in June, 2012, her father received a nice present: a short flight with a Cessna 152 at an airport above Miskolc.  She had enough time to go with him to the airport since it was summer and she found the airport world very compelling: a group of young people, a lot…

A Good Week of Soaring in Ely Nevada

From July 7-11, 2012 a few guys were able to fly 22 OLC flights over 1,000 km. A quarter of the flights were 1,000 km FAI triangles. My best flight was a 1,253 km (779 mile) flight that included a 913 km (567 mile) FAI triangle at a speed of 157.34 km/hr (97.77 mph). Uwe Kleinhemple completed a 1,124 km (698.5 mile) FAI triangle at a speed of 146.05 km/hr (90.76 mph) and Ramy Yanetz scored 1,385 OLC points with a total distance of 1,385 km (860.6 miles), which included a 1,031 km (640.7 mile) FAI triangle.

Dalhart XC Camp, Day 1

Well, as I write this from my motel room Saturday morning, Day 1 of SSB’s XC encampment in Dalhart is in the bag. As I suspected, it was a long, busy day and I finally got back to my room last night at 10pm… Most of the folks from Boulder were still enroute to DHT…

The friendly folks…

Flying Day 11, December 2

It will help to understand today’s flight if you scroll down to the Introduction section below and look at the map of the 3 controlled airspaces. Essentially, 3 of us (myself, Ed Downham and Anders Anderson)  flew a task clockwise around the Bloemfontein TMA and down the narrow corridor between that and the TMA to…

Flying Day 10, December 1

Storms in the area so a rest day for most. I took a 1.8 hour local flight and went out to look at some landing places. Came back as a storm came in. Tomorrow should be a good day.People think that “flying in Africa” is like looking down on jungles and rhinos. It actually looks…

Flying Day 9, November 30

The confusion continued about the weather and so we decided on a 316 km triangle racing task that would keep us all reasonably close to the airport. However, several of us saw that conditions were better looking toward the second turnpoint so 4 of us decided to do the task in reverse order. It was…
