Bill is a Soaring Cafe Co-Founder and the Publishing Editor. He is a two-time U.S. 18m national champion with extensive racing and cross-country soaring experience. He represented the U.S. in the 18 meter class at the 2010 and 2012 FAI World Gliding Championships Bill earned his airplane rating in 1981, but was looking for new challenges by 1989 when the lure of motorless flight induced him to join the Huntsville Soaring Club. After soloing in a Blanik L – 13, Bill began soaring cross country in the club 1-26, then bought a Duster followed by an HP-18 a few years later. It was with that HP-18 that he won the Region 5 South Sports Class Championship in 1995, his first championship.

Tullahoma, Tenn Contest Database Review – Part II

Following the procedure developed during my Perry airport review (see https://soaringcafe.com/2014/03/perry-wagener-sc-airstrip-review-part-ii/), I started by importing the 2014 ‘tullahm1.csv’ file (Comma-separated-variable) into Excel.  I prefer using an Excel file because Leibacher can handle it directly, and because there is a converter(https://www.earthpoint.us/ExcelToKml.aspx) that can convert a properly organized Excel file to KML, which can then be viewed in Google…

Tullahoma, Tenn Contest Database Review

As part of my 12-step crash recovery program, I have taken a solemn vow to never fly at a new soaring site without first having thoroughly reviewed the contest waypoint database for that site.  I want to determine, to the extent possible using my feeble brain and Google Earth, whether or not the landing places…

1-26 Championships Wrap-Up

No update for a few days, I know. I hate it when that happens, so here is the rest of the story. Thursday was, I think, the 5th attempt at Day 2. The morning meeting wasn’t very optimistic on the weather and Hutch called a 12:30 grid time. We decided to squeeze the annual 1-26…

Harris Hill pilots go to the World Gliding Championships

The excitement was palpable when our club found out that Harris Hill pilots Karin Schlosser and Heinz Weissenbuehler, Jr. were selected to represent the United States in the 20 meter Multiplace Class at the World Gliding Championships in Finland. Nicknaming themselves Team ARC for the Arcus T glider they are flying in the contest, we…

Day 2 Try 4 at the 1-26 Championships

The morning weather briefing was for similar weather to yesterday, with lift and cloudbase in the 4-5000 range and southwest winds aloft in the 20-25 mph range. No one was very happy about this of course. The task was a 1.5 hr MAT with only the start and finish defined, everything else was up to…
