Day 1 at 2012 CCSC XC Camp

The bad news today was that it was raining.  The good news was that we flew a 150 mile task anyway, in Condor, and everyone had a good time.  I was a nervous wreck because I had insisted on everyone showing up for this camp ready to fly in Condor on bad weather days, and I was now in the position of having to make it all work.  Fortunately, the camp participants did, in fact, come  ready to fly in Condor, and we all had a great time flying a thermal task in the Slovenia scenery.

The day started off with a welcome from Camp Director Frank Paynter, and he was followed by experienced competitor and ace ‘blue day’ flyer John Lubon for a CCSC soaring area briefing, by Camp Manager Rolf Hegele’s talk on CCSC field procedures, and Jim Garrison’s talk on Start/Finish Gate procedures.  Frank Paynter followed with a weather briefing (not too hard, as it was raining steadily at this point), and then by a taco salad lunch.

The afternoon was occupied with Condor flying (I think J.P. Stewart, X8 is posting about the Condor race), and the evening lecture was on Landouts by Jim Garrison.

By the end of the day as I write this, I am one tired puppy, but a happy one – it seems like we didn’t screw up too badly, and the campers seemed to appreciate the time and attention they are getting from our ace mentoring crew (I know I certainly appreciate it).

Tomorrow’s weather is a bit iffy, but we may be able to get in some mild  XC flying in the late afternoon, depending on how quickly the strong front currently to our west moves through our soaring area.  Whichever way it works out, we will either fly in real life, or we will fly in Condor.

Stay tuned,

Frank
