Gordon Boettger and Hugh Bennett Honored at NAA Spring Awards Luncheon

From the National Aeronautic Association (NAA) March, 2012 e-Newsletter:

“The year 2012 saw a number of outstanding aviation records recognized by NAA, the U. S. representative of the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale. [Recipients of] five of seven records chosen as “Most Memorable” by the NAA Contest and Records Board were on hand at the NAA Spring Awards Ceremony and Luncheon in March, 2012, which was sponsored by GE Aviation.”

In April, 2011, Gordon Boettger and Hugh Bennett flew Hugh’s Duo Discus 1,321 miles in 13 hours to break their previous record, 960 miles, set two months earlier. Hugh and Gordon used mountain wave lift generated by the Sierras to make their extraordinary flight, which the NAA has deservedly recognized as one of the top U.S. aviation achievements of 2011.

On receiving the award, Gordon said, “This is the most dynamic type of flying anyone can do. I got Hugh hooked on this. Our key is trying to promote this and my goal is to get visibility out there through soaring.”

The Soaring Café published Gordon’s accounts of their record flights in 2011 and we interviewed Gordon and Hugh at the February, 2012 SSA convention in Reno. At the convention, Gordo gave a fascinating presentation on planning and executing long flights in the Sierra wave.

Congratulations to Hugh and Gordon on making it into the top echelon of U.S. aviation record-setters in 2011!
