March 10 at Seminole

Today was the official practice day for the Seniors, and we all trooped to the hangar for the 0930 meeting under low clouds and windy conditions.  CD John Good welcomed us all, and laid down some general ground and safety rules in advance of tomorrow’s mandatory safety meeting.  He also noted that the time change from EST to EDST occurs tonight, so he urged everyone to make sure they woke up at exactly 0230 to move their timepieces ahead to 0330.

The weather gradually improved to the point where several pilots tried their luck, but nobody got very far away.  Ken Sorenson (KM) reported that cloudbases to the south were actually  pretty good (in the  4500-5000′ range), but as he approached Seminole on his way north, cloud bases went down to around 2000′ forcing him to abandon the task and land  rather than continue north to an assured landout.

Our ace contest manager/gliderport owner/mother/superwoman took a few minutes from her very busy day to take a short glider ride with Doug Jacobs in John Good’s Duo Discus (MP), and apparently had a great time – way to go Doug!

Andreea has declared today to be ‘CD Day’ and followed John Good around with a camera to record CD-like activities.  I have included a few of the many photos, but the last one deserves a bit of explanation; John received an important call from England, and the only place he could find with decent reception and low background noise was the clubhouse bathroom/shower.  Andreea happened to notice this and took some pictures, and inadvertently also attracted the (noisy) attention of some other pilots and crew.  When John started complaining about the noise, we suggested that he simply close and lock the door, thereby giving himself the equivalent of a private phone booth.  John’s reply was “Yes, but then then I can’t get good reception!” ;-)

Contest starts tomorrow, but the popular weather forecast is a bit gloomy.  20% chance of rain, cloudy, and windy – ugh!
