2012 Pre-WGC Report—11 January—Day 3 Cancelled

1500Z—From Jason Arnold…

“Contest day three launch is planned for 1330 local time, but is highly variable due visibility problems up to 1,500 meters caused by a volcanic eruption in Chile and its associated ash plume. An updated forecast is due in one hour and may require a change in the launch schedule. Crews and pilots have been asked to be flexible due to ‘difficult’ conditions.”

1848Z—Update from Jason…

“Everyone (110 gliders) assembled this morning, some open trailers coming from town where they were kept in warehouses and garages to weather the last day’s storms (tornadoes and hail nearby).
We all waited on the grid and after many sniffer evaluations, the day was cancelled; first due to low visibility (volcanic ash!), second the marginal thermal activity, and third ‘it just got to late’.
So we sit and wait.”
