Last Blog in 2011—to Remember the WGC WORLD CHAMPION from Hobbs!

ZES Kees

The last blog of the year 2011 for  Soaring Café. Good to hear our cooperation continues in 2012 as Bill and Rand seem to “be delighted to have me in the Soaring Café Team”! I love it as well and when you like it as readers too, it is all OK, as…the reader is the boss.

Time to look back in this extra edition and I do not look back on the past year but on 1967. This picture from that year shows the WGC champion from Hobbs, Kees Musters. A real talent! On December 27th, it was 24 years ago since he died in a freak accident colliding with his hang glider against a mountain in France. In 1967 we knew already he was a great pilot and instructor. I know, as I got my training from him and from Dick Teuling. Both students then at the technical university of Eindhoven and member from the ZES [Einhoven Student Aeroclub]. Dick still flies Nationals here in Holland and has flown several international comps. In this picture, Kees and I are ready to fly a competition in “our fancy high performance KA 7.” I was more or less “oak-bag”/ read ballast.

Other gliders from the ZES at that time; a Rhönlerche [instruction-glider] and a Grunau Baby in which I went solo!
Another friend and member of the club, Hans Jonkers, died during the start in his DG 400 at a summer camp a couple of years ago. These pictures are his legacy to the ZES and are now scanned by a member of the club,Ton Staassen.
Hans was the one who got me into gliding and thanks to him I discovered this world in which I still find a lot of joy by writing and keeping a huge network with friends all over the world.

Also found my [now ex, after 30 years] husband George, got my lovely children Dennis and Inge, and two great grand children. Can’t imagine a life anymore without soaring.

Just a good reason to look once back and…then  ahead; here we come 2012!!!

What I want to say…enjoy your soaring to the fullest in 2012, we all love our sport as it is a great sport and  a pretty safe one as well, but remain careful.

CU next year, looking forward to that!
