German Sport Soldiers…First Aussie 1000 km for the Season!

It sure was a great achievement to get Australia’s first 1000 k flight this season to Stonefield Base.” — Sportsoldier Benjamin Bachmeier.
And… “it was the prefield of an outstanding trough line wich brought the first 1000k day.”
As well as  “The flying in Australia, the exploring of almost unknown soaring terrain and the preparation of the long-distance tasks is an awesome experience for all of us. We have already worked out suitable turn points and prepared for a 1000  FAI triangle – don´t be too surprised to find it on the OLC in the next weeks!”

When you are good in a sport you can apply in Germany to be selected by the army as a sport-soldier. When you are a good young glider pilot, you can do so too. You get a lot of help and they select places for you to get new experience. A lot of the young German JWGC pilots are or were sport soldiers. They are allowed to fly a Discus 2B, YB, donated by Bruno Gantenbrink. This glider is fully equiped and ready for comps.
This year I got to know via the Internet, Benjamin Bachmeier, as he is, like I am, a keen blogger. I liked his enthusiasm.
He told me that he was going to Stonefield in Australia to fly there from a new soaring base with a German organization [ www.fly-down-under.com]. My interest grew!
I promised to keep an eye on him and his mate Fabian Peitz.
On December 7th, Fabian managed to fly the FIRST 1000 km this season in Australia in the YB and HIS first 1000 km.
His exclusive reaction soon!
