SOARING100 Events: October 21-24

SOARING100, a four-day celebration that marks a century of recreational soaring, will open Friday, October 21st in Nags Head, North Carolina, near the site where Orville Wright made an almost 10 minute soaring flight 100 years ago. With this historic flight, Orville established a world duration record for gliders that stood for 10 years.

SOARING100 will continue through Monday, October 24th. Activities include sailplane and hang glider flight demonstrations, static displays, flight simulators, model building, and talks on everything from Otto Lilienthal and his glider flying to the Space Shuttle. A barbecue, parties, storytelling, park tours, kite flying, and other activities to engage children and young people are also on the schedule.

Jim and Simine Short are the principal organizers of SOARING100. They have worked closely with the National Park Service and the state of North Carolina, who will host many of the events at Jockey’s Ridge State Park (JRSP) in Nags Head and the Wright Brothers National Memorial (WBNM) at Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. Access to Jockey’s Ridge is free and entrance to the Wright Brothers Memorial is free for visitors under the age of 15. Persons 16 years old or above can purchase a 7-day pass to WBNM for $4 each.
