Since I am planning go directly from the Perry Regional to Bermuda High for their regional, it’s time to do the Airport/Airstrip review for that site as well. My basis for this review is the 2013 18m waypoint database.
My first, second, and third impression was “Wow – this is a clean site! I could only find one airstrip (Lamar, shown below) that appears to be abandoned, and I couldn’t find anything else in the database that I thought was un-doable in an 18m ship (some are a little tight, but nothing that says “RUN AWAY!!”. This is extraordinary – and literally remarkable. I went back into one of the database files looking for information about the authors of the last update, and found the following annotation:
** + ** 18 Meter Nationals, 2013 + ** + ** Contributed by Tom Moore and Robin Fleming + ** Via Rick Sheppe + ** +
These three guys deserve a round of applause from the soaring community for the bang-up job they did on the Bermuda High database – WELL DONE! ;-).
Lamar (38 mi southeast of Bermuda High):
So, my personal edition of the Bermuda High database for the upcoming 2014 regional contest will be identical to the ‘official’ version with the exception of a single airstrip – Lamar.
