Rudolf W. “Rudy” Mozer: September 27, 1929 – February 25, 2014

We were saddened to learn of Rudy Mozer’s passing on February 25, 2014.

Rudy was a successful entrepreneur, a loving father and husband, an outstanding sailplane pilot, and an influential figure in American soaring throughout the latter half of the Twentieth Century.

Rudy passed his love of soaring on to his children. Two of his sons, Eric and Peter, also became successful glider pilots. Eric has represented the U.S. in several world championships and now serves as President of the FAI’s International Gliding Commission (IGC).

He began flying in 1943 at age 14 in a glider that he helped build in the evenings after school. The site of his first solo flight (via bungee launch) was at the Hornberg near Stuttgart. Through his contacts in Germany, in 1956 he became the US dealer for Schleicher Sailplanes. He shared his joy in the sport with his four sons, and over the years achieved a reputation as a skilled pilot, with much success in both regional and national competitions. Rudy has earned almost every soaring award there is, and his name is familiar to sailplane pilots throughout the world.

Rudy’s obituary is posted at http://www.desmondfuneralhome.com/obituary/Rudolf-W.-Mozer/_/1348382 .
