Gold and Diamonds Down Under

On Saturday, 28 September, Australian pilot Paul Tridgell flew his first Gold Height gain in the morning, then on a second flight in the afternoon flew his first Diamond Height gain!; is this a world first?

Paul was flying his DG1001M at the annual Bunyan Wave Camp in Australia hosted by the Canberra Gliding Club at their home airfield. The camp is a nine day event, and for the first time in over 30 years of camp history, pilots experienced mountain wave conditions on every day of the camp.

The camp competition is for the Allan Armistead Memorial Trophy, which is awarded to the pilot who achieves the best Height Gain at the camp. This year’s winner—and for the second successive year—was Frank Johanne with a height gain of 19,993 ft.
