“More than just gliding” – with this slogan DG Flugzeugbau introduces their work in a new brochure. The company, located in Bruchsal near Karlsruhe in Southwestern Germany, still works mainly on sailplane manufacturing. But using their knowledge in composite structures, new branches have developed over the past years and the company is now organized with four different departments. The construction of “wind wings”  for wind turbines – part of the newly introduced composite branch – is an interesting example of how to use glider-building knowledge for renewable energies.

Currently, the most exciting project is the VOLOCOPTER, a futuristic micro light aircraft powered by 18 electric motors. Worldwide the vertically launching helicopter like aircraft raises interest. A first take off and test flight is scheduled for the later summer on the small airfield next to DG’s factory.

The DG 1001 which comes in different versions is DG’s top seller and the most important product in the sailplane manufacturing branch. The club version is used at the US Air Force Academy, the powered version is well known from Jim Payne’s long wave flights. Holger Back, DG’s director and passionate glider pilot, describes the DG 1001 Club as an ideal training glider. The 18-m ship provides a lot of advantages like automatic control connections, a safety cockpit and extra space for trim weights. Its aerobatic certification is also a nice feature. In the future, the production of aircraft will of course remain DG’s core business and Mr. Back is optimistic about the coming years. The full article with photos can be found on DG’s website.
