A sunny good morning on day 9 here in Uvalde!

9.00 ; The shower yesterday ” nearly ” reached us , as you can see on the picture, but decided  to turn to the West. A bit of rain would have been welcome on a dusty field , but the combination dust and rain on white wings is not so good!Luckily the weather is not in our hands!!!

Pilots were nicely back in time , though some had to land on 33 as the wind shift, forced the organizers to go from 15 to 33 in the middle of the finishes, as a tailwind is never good. All went without problems!

Looking back it was interesting to see if pilots who took the risk yesterday to go late were “punished”  or “blessed”.
In the 15 m. class it was clear; the Belgium brothers Boudoin and Manu litt left nearly [ one pilot even left at 15.50]  last after 15.00 and won the day. Devaluated, but still 759 and 755 points for the brothers, flying 310 km in about 2.15 on the dot!!!! The 2 Dutch pilots did a great job as well finishing on spot 3 and 4.

In 18 m. class , nearly the same. The Czech pilot leaving last at 15.30!!!, won the day in the ASG 29 flying 397 km. in 2.37; speed 151 km./h.
The UK pilots just left a few minutes before 3 and were 2 and 3 while Jerzy from Canada had a good 4th place for the day, followed by the 2 German pilots.

In open class Michael Sommer and Pete Harvey were “fighting for the daily honnor”  again. The fight was in favour of Michael this time , he won with ONE point more!!!!!Followed by Tassilo, Laurent and Oscar all still in the 800 points range. More later off to briefing now. CU LATER, stand by!

11.00 ; Tasks today;
15 m.; 598.1 km.
18m.;591 km.
open ;663.4 km.
Grid time at 12.00.Earliest launch.12.30

Briefing is over
and the CD started with telling us that yesterday- morning he thought the tasks might have been too short, at noon however he was pleased to see the tasks were about right and when Dan the [weather] man , called him to tell him a major dust/gust front was reaching the field at 17.23 [he turned out to be ONLY 5 minutes wrong] he was pleased the task was spot on. Today we saw the gust front clearly on pictures from the radar and passing by , it moved slowly to the S.

What happened more? Team introductions continued and this time the TC’s from  Lithuania , The Netherlands and Poland were itroducing their teams! Was proud on “our” young TC Rene; his first TC job and he does it in great style.

The winners got their day prizes and where the ones I prelimenary mentioned this morning.
The winning pilot from Czech Rep. looked VERY young to me!!

On the social site Kerry mentioned the INTERNATIONAL PARTY TONIGHT!
Some coutries are going to serve “pretty strong booze” so be WARNED!!!

The weather;
It will be another pretty hot day, 100 dgr F and 38.5 C.
—trigger temperature will be 32.5 dgr. C
—Max height 8000 ft up to 9000 ft in the South Area
— lift up to 3m. at 15.00 and 3.5m. at 16.00

This more “tough” wind night give some scattered couds in the afternoon.
— sunset at 20.19 and the finish line closes at 20.04.

B tasks will be held , when the weather does n’t appear to be  as good as it seems. And a warning for the 15 m. class they pass by on the end of their first leg  to the TP , going on the 2d leg, a forbidden area.

There will be TC meeting at the front of the grid on the main runway for a change in the 18 m. task at 12.10!!!was just announced on the radio.

GAGGLE TALK;
—Heard this morning that it was not Oscar but Laurens who flew with his father as a father son combination in the same competition, so Dennis and George are indeed the first ever father son combination in one glider during a WGC. Pretty proud on that. But how great it must have been for young Laurens to fly with his father as well!!!

—received a link to a nice you tube video yesterday abouit Patrick Stouffs and his brother Arnaud. A very young Patrick flew here in 1991, now he is here again, sill looking fit and young but a bit more wrinkles and great hair. Rand will put the 9 minute video on today.

—talking to the Swiss TC , former Dutch pilot Willem Langelaan living in  Canada now, this morning. Heard that Karin Schlösser is here. She and her sister Evelyne were members from the same student aeroclub I was a member of and I am proud to say I paved the way in 1967, as being the FIRST lady between the men [ not done, as….the president thought…. I would ruin the atmosphere during “real man talk/hours “, but they voted in favour of me then, so I was accepted ] and the first NOT studying at the Technical University. The father from the girls was professor at this University and he built with his section of students the winch our club was using. GREAT TIMES, good memories.One of my 2 instructors was Kees Musters , the WGC champion in Hobbs, who tragically got killed in a hang glider accident in France in December 1987.
The other one Dick Teuling and I still meet him at the Dutch Nationals.

on the pictures above; Kees and I and Dick letting me SOLO in the Grunau Baby.
