A Ripper of a Day??

Tasks today on Sunday August 5 2012:

Open class 628 km.
18 m. 553 km.
15 m. 567 km.

Briefing is over and I said a warm hello first this morning to Gerhard Waibel and his wife Tilly from Germany. He doesn’t need any extra introduction.

Gerhard Waibel and his wife Tilly!

Briefing today!

—On the table the pilots found a bottle of BBC sauce as a gift from one of the businesses in town. This will happen every day.
—Part time on Tuesday as the USA team gives us time to share thoughts and drinks in the white tent.
—The VIP tent is open for pilots only; they can have a beer there and /or a snack after their flight. Nice idea!
—The winners from the last practise day were mentioned and when you have not seen their names they were: in 15 m. class Radek Krejcenik, in 18 m. Michel Streit and in open Michael Sommer.
—Med Dr. Hartley Falbaum, spoke about de-hydration and to start drinking straight after waking up. Water  and water with supplemets and for the pilots while flying only water should be good enough. For crews after physical jobs, more water! And…don’t overdo beer, wine and coffee.
—the safety briefing yesterday brought up a few things which will be talked over later in TC briefings to keep the briefing short. As the TC said : “With 100 top glider pilots, otherwise you would not be here and  quite a few airline pilots, there will be 100 opinions. ” And the organizers want to listen to all and discuss them in smaller meetings with TC’s.

The weather is supposed to be good. Dan called it the more classic type of Uvalde weather. There will be increased little moisture and that will bring small changes every day. Wind will be from the SE again with 8-12 kts.

Sea breeze seems to be a little worry today; he expects it today here in Uvalde at 8 PM with—and that’s new for pilots and crews—some isolated showers and/or thunderstorms. Not the real Texas ones, but he warns crew and pilots to secure gliders well tonight.
Max altitude will be 8000 ft increasing during the day to 9000 ft.
Temperature 37.5°C.
Lift 1.5m/s.-2m/s at 2 PM and 2.5-3m/s. at 4 PM.

Grid closes at 12 and first expected launch at 12.30.
You are up to date now—more about the task in the next blog!
