WSPA’s Annual Seminar, Final Report

A beautiful, successful seminar at Chilhowee Gliderport in Tennesse has come to an end We had 35 registrants, 28 of them actively flying. It was great to see how many couples and families participated The age span of the participants was between 12 and 76. Several were power pilots going for their glider rating. In the end we had 4 solos and one commercial ticket.  The tow logs showed 190 flight during the week. Our two tow pilots, Linda LaBerge and Gerry Whitson performed a super-human task towing in 100 degrees heat.

A big thank you to our instructors, Sarah Arnold, Neita and Mark Montague, Chuck Schroll, Linwood Stevenson and Lukas von Atzingen,  the latter one took several participants through the steps of aerobatics; to Sandy Snyder, our kitchen boss who brought all the “raw materials” for the delicious meals our assigned kitchen crews created.  (I learned to make real southern sweet tea); to our tireless line boys Luke and Joe; flight recorder Tom Snyder and air boss Jason Arnold. Thank you also to the clubs who provided extra gliders, the K21 from Eaglesville and the L-23 from Knoxville. A special thank you to our hosts Sarah and Jason, to Maja Djurisic, who did all the preliminary work but could not attend due to a family emergency; Neita Montague who directed the seminar with a firm hand.

At the banquet the winner of the quilt was drawn. The lucky winner was Jay Campbell from South Carolina. The winner of the limerick contest was Tom Johnson from Florida who summed it up nicely (and you thought this was a women-only event).

I wanted to fly like a bird,
But my friends all said “That’s absurd!”
I came from the stix
Now I fly with these chix
And my fun meter pegged off the board.

See you in Moriarty in 2013
