2012 Open Class Nationals — Day Seven

Ray Gimmey in the ASG-29-18 won the day with 229 miles at 70 MPH. He is also the overall leader with 6480 points. It was a Turn Area Task with turnpoints at Coleville, Dayton, Sweetwater, and Tiger Field with a minimum time of 3:15. Ray said the day looked like gangbusters at the start, but it wasn’t. Ten miles South of Mt Segal he found a thermal in a location he had never encountered one before. At Mt. Patterson there was an 18-20 knot wind, but he could not find any lift. On the last leg, he got a 7 knot thermal over Rabbit Dry Lake which gave him final glide so that he arrived back with altitude to spare.

Dave Nadler in the Antares discovered wave while waiting for the start, and climbed up, marked it, flew away, then flew back to start while other gliders were in a thermal below the wave. In second place for the day was Mike Robsion in the Nimbus 3DM with 251 miles at 68 MPH. Third place went to Chip Garner in the Windward Duck Hawk with 220 miles at 65 MPH.

Rick Walters and Pete Alexander landed out at Yerington in the Arcus. They were retrieved by aerotow, and beat the rest of the pack back to Minden. They made the mistake of trying to fly farther East, while everyone else stuck to the Pinenuts for their north-south runs.

In second place overall is Rick Indrebo in the ASW-27 with 6400 points. Third place is held by Mike Robison with 6390 points.
