Final Practice Day at JWGC Musbach

Hello and welcome to Freudenstadt – Musbach, Germany, site of the junior world gliding championships. As I write this, we have gridded and the launch is on hold while we wait for the temperature to increase and the cloud bases to rise.

Our pilots, Boyd Willat flying an LS-7 in club class, and Devin Bargainner flying an LS-8 in the standard class have each flown one other time during the previous practice days, and are hoping that the weather lifts enough to get a good look at the area before the first contest day tomorrow.

We are currently under the influence of an approaching cold front which is pushing a moist, unstable airmass into the contest area.  Yesterday, the practice day was cancelled due to overcast skies and light rain. This morning we woke up to a heavy fog which has slowly been burning off. Forecasts are for cloud bases at approximately 2000ft AGL, rising to 3000ft (approximately) in the afternoon. However, as the bases lift, so does the chance of overdevelopment and thunderstorms. The contest organizers are hoping to get a task in before our window opportunity closes.  The clock is ticking…

The grid at the 2011 Junior Worlds in Musbach: Saturday, August 6th

Cheers from Musbach.
