Einar Enevoldson Elected to U. S. Soaring Hall of Fame

Einar Enevoldson, who with the late Steve Fossett in 2006 made a record-breaking 50,671 foot sailplane flight in Argentina, has been elected to the United States Soaring Hall of Fame. He will be inducted at a banquet at the National Soaring Museum on Harris Hill, Elmira, NY on May 7, 2011.

Einar Enevoldson

Enevoldson was a civilian research pilot for NASA’s Dryden Flight Research Center from 1968 until 1986. He was involved in many research programs and flew many types of NASA aircraft including the F-111, F-14, YF-12A, the modified Schweizer 1-36 Controlled Deep Stall Sailplane, and the X-24B lifting body. At the NSM’s annual Soaring History Symposium on May 6-7, 2011, he will speak about his experiences with the Deep Stall project, and the 1-36 he flew will be on display.

Having retired from NASA in 1986, Enevoldson began what he terms “the most interesting work” of his career as Chief Test Pilot for Grob exotic aircraft. He did all the testing on the German high altitude reconnaissance aircraft Egrett, and the extraordinary, extreme altitude research aircraft, Strato 2C. He is currently Director of the Perlan Project, about which he will speak at the banquet.
