Prototype PowerFLARM Shown at SSA Conference

Lee Kulkhe (the US PowerFLARM distributor) and Dave Nadler provided a prototype PowerFLARM unit for SSA Conference participants to see and hold.  This unit was built in October of last year and been used by Dave as a development platform for the updated software.  Dave has also flown with this unit.

The unit is fully functional although the user interface is not complete at this time.   Below are a few images of the unit.

Here’s a demonstration of a prototype PowerFLARM as shown at the 2011 SSA Conference in Philadelphia (Dave Nadler narrates).  A script file is being injected into the unit from his laptop which creates a target approaching the glider.  As the target gets closer, the scale automatically changes, the target color turns orange, then red with an increasing sense of urgency created by the audible alarm.  This unit has flown and is fully functional.  Production units are expected to arrive in the US in April 2011. Note: you can view this in HD.

There was also some discussion about the PowerFLARM “Brick” unit. The PF Brick will use much of the same hardware, does not have the screen, and will have a USB port for uploading information and downloading flight logs.

Much more information is available about the PowerFLARM system at GliderPilot.org/FLARM.
